how old for bitch season.

04.04.2008

Hi i have a 11 month old springer spanial in fact its the same one from a previous question ie: she ate her own pooh. Anyway new question when will she have her first season as she seems to be cleaning herself more than normal and also seems a little down in the dumps?

Hello Sasha,

As most bitches have had their first season by one year of age, your Springer Spaniel bitch is quite likely to be very close to her first season. She could be cleaning herself more than previously if she is just coming into her season and especially if there is any sign of a bloody discharge from her vulva. Her vulva may look a little swollen. That is all perfectly normal and whilst not all bitches show a mood change during this time, it is possibile.
As long as she is eating well and lively you dont have much to worry about except avoiding the attentions of any unwanted male dogs for her. The various phases of the season last about 3 weeks. If you have any doubts about her health generally you should arrange a check up with your vet.
