Cat pimples

07.02.2008

In the last couple of weeks my cat has developed small bumps all over his body. It's like he has chicken pox! they don't seem to cause him any pain or itching, but the ones on his head have started to bleed today. We took him to another vet that told us she hadn't seen it before and suggested six hundred pounds worth of investigatory tests.
What should my next step be?

- Cheryl

Hello Cheryl

We are sending you a prompt answer to your question as the symptoms your cat is showing do sound quite unusual, extensive and rather concerning. It's impossible for us to suggest a diagnosis, especially without a full clinical examination of your cat. This vet is at least being very frank with you. In our experience of cases where symptoms are very unusual, further diagnostic tests become necessary. If your cat's skin condition is a rare one then any vet you took him to could need to carry out some further tests, possibly including skin biopsies. The exact cost would depend on what tests were to be done. Skin that is starting to bleed must be quite sore so you need to make a prompt decision over allowing further tests. Why not discuss your concerns in more detail with your vet?
