Community | Ask The Vet pregnant cat02.10.2007how do you tell if a cat is pregnant? mine has suddenly started to eat a lot more than usual and has become a lot bigger around that area? if she is pregnant it it usual to bring her in for a check up or should i just let nature take its course? thanks - anna thomson Hello Anna Thank you for your question. You don't say the age of your cat and it makes a big difference in terms of the possibility of pregnancy. If your cat is over 5 months, and definitely an unneutered female, then pregnancy can happen. If she's older and never had kittens or you aren't sure about her neutered status then she could just be getting fatter. A cat's abdomen can enlarge for other reasons as well so a check up at the vets is advisable, will aid the diagnosis and ascertain her health status. If she is pregnant nature will take its course eventually but the duration of a cat's pregnancy is 63 days so you might have to wait a while. Most cat's, if in good health, cope with pregnancy and birth but occasionally there are problems. It's much better for her if you do know soon so you can be prepared to do the best for her. We think you should get her checked over by your vet. - The Barton Lodge Veterinary Team Back |
