dog dementia

03.10.2006

i wanted to know if dogs can get dementia, cause i have been looking it up on the net but it only applies to old dogs but my dog is only 2 and 1/2,and she has been acting very strange she has had many health probs in past, can you maybe help with this many thanks.

- lallie

Hello Lallie,
Thank you for your question regarding your dog's strange behaviour. Older dogs can suffer from senile dementia, like some elderly people. In a young dog like yours any behaviour changes are not likely to be diagnosed as dementia.

You don't mention what type of health problems she has had, but these could be sigificant. The best course of action is a consultation with a vet to determine if your dogs current strange behaviour is related to her health or some other cause. Sorry, we can't be more specific without further information.
