licking/swallowing a lot

28.03.2006

I rescued a 3.5 year old female staffordshire bull terrier last week from a rescue shelter (although I think shes nearer to 5 years old!) and I've noticed that she seems to lick her lips and swallow alot, especially when sleeping.

As I've never noticed this in any dogs I've previously had and she is my first rescue, I wondered if this is something I should get checked out?

Hello Eva,

Thank you for your question. It's wonderful that you have given a new home to a rescue shelter dog. It is always a good idea to get any new pet examined by a veterinary surgeon to check for any health problems. It may be that licking her lips a lot is a habit of your new dog's rather than a problem as it doesn't sound like a serious symptom. However, you need to know this for certain for your dog's well-being, and for your peace of mind. After a check up, and when your dog has settled in more (a week is not a very long time), you will know more certainly what is normal for her. We hope you enjoy your new pet.
