Community | Ask The Vet female dog05.03.2006is it normal for a female dog to try to be intimate with pillows - cheryl Dear Cheryl, Er...no- not usually would be the answer but we have been thinking about your enquiry and we need to know a few more facts about the female dog in question. We fear our response could seem quite complicated. Firstly is your female dog an entire bitch or has she been neutered? (spayed, using the correct terminology.) Mounting behaviour can be displayed by dogs or bitches, entire or neutered, and can be a sign of dominance when it relates to mounting other dogs of either sex. It can also be an attention seeking ploy. Male dogs most commonly mount other male dogs simply to show that they are the boss dog. Mounting behaviour by bitches can also be a sign of dominance over another dog, but in relation to mounting of other objects we have sometimes seen this behaviour as a symptom of a hormone imbalance. The most common hormone imbalance for entire bitches relates to the period about 8 weeks after their heat during which bitches can exhibit signs of a false pregnancy. Is this behaviour is accompanied by any other pronounced symptoms such as mammary development with milk production or general moody, possessive behaviour with making nests and carrying toys? If so, you should get the female dog and her behaviour checked out by your veterinary surgeon in case some treatment is needed to stop the whole false pregnancy syndrome. Sorry for the long answer but hope this advice is helpful. - The Barton Lodge Veterinary Team Back |
