Community | Ask The Vet Shaking of head and ear scratching30.11.2005Ive recently rehomed a 2 year old cat and have noticed that she shakes her head quite a lot and scratches her ears - could she have an infection or mites? Also, she seems a little mad and runs around like a maniac as if something scared her even when its peaceful - could the two be connected? - Enquirer Dear Enquirer, We are sorry for the delay in answering your question, which has been due to technical problems on the website. Hopefully if the symptoms have become worse you have contacted us by telephone, or taken your new cat for a check up. If you have not already done this, certainly its a good idea to get any new pet checked over by your vet. As you have rightly considered, there could be an ear infection or mites present in the ears, causing the symptoms of head shaking and ear scratching. If this is the case some veterinary treatment needs to be prescribed. I wonder when your cat was last flea treated? fleas can also cause the symptoms you describe as they often bite around the ears and head. Even in winter, fleas are a common problem as they happily live indoors in our centrally heated homes. As to your new cat's behaviour, without ruling out problems, it is not possible to say if it is connected. The longer she is with you the better you will get to know what is normal for her. Some cats are very playful and lively and others less so, depending on temperament. Hope you are enjoying your new pet. - The Barton Lodge Veterinary Team Back |
