Dog with a sore throat!

24.12.2008

Our Cocker Spaniel had her Kennel Cough vaccination before she went into kennels. She's been home a week and seems to have lost the volume in her bark. She also lets out a squeaking noise when she's excited about feed time. Her appetite is fine and her stools are normal. She seems a little under the weather, should I bring her in for a check up?

Hello Tracy,

Thank for your question. Hopefully your spaniel's problem has maybe improved rather than got lots worse since you e-mailed but if she is worse, obviously the best and safest thing would be to get a prompt check-up appointment with your vet.

Despite having the kennel cough vaccination it is occasionally possible for a dog to contract a mild version of the disease. This could account for the symptoms you described, the squeaky noise and loss of bark being caused by a bit of a sore throat. Also some dogs do just bark lots whilst in kennels and give themselves a sore throat which takes a while to clear.

The symptoms didn't sound too serious but its always best to get something checked by your vet if you aren't sure.
