Do Kittens Teeth?

02.12.2008

Do kittens teeth like babies do? Would the kitten eat less if it's gums were hurting whilst the teeth come through? What signs are there that a kitten is teething?

- Laura

Hello Laura

Thank you for your question about kittens and teething. Kittens gradually lose their baby teeth to be replaced by permanent adult teeth from around 4 months of age and usually all of their permanent teeth have erupted by 6-7 months of age. This happens without any accompanying signs but you might find the odd tiny little tooth on the carpet when it has been lost.

We have never known a kitten show any signs of discomfort specifically due to the teething process so that's very unlike human babies who can show discomfort and be generally fretful. A kitten could develop a sore mouth for another reason such as an infection and gum inflammation or 'gingivitis' and then show a reduced appetite as a result of this. If you have a kitten and are concerned about a reduced appetite the best advice would be to have a check up with your vet to see if your kitten has a medical problem.
